For us, that place was Kalpeni Island.

Unlike the more familiar islands of Lakshadweep, Kalpeni remained largely untouched by mainstream tourism for decades. Known for its spectacular coral lagoon, peaceful island life, and untouched beauty, Kalpeni offers a side of Lakshadweep that very few travellers have experienced. What makes this journey even more special is that it begins with something entirely new for Indian tourism — a seaplane.

A New Chapter in Lakshadweep Tourism

For years, reaching the islands of Lakshadweep involved conventional flights and boat transfers. But this journey was different. Standing at Kochi and preparing to board a seaplane, there was a sense of excitement unlike any ordinary holiday. We were about to experience one of India's most exciting tourism developments — direct seaplane connectivity to Kalpeni Island.

Unlike conventional aircraft, a seaplane doesn't simply land on a runway. It takes off from water and lands on water. As the aircraft rose above the Arabian Sea, endless shades of blue stretched towards the horizon. Then, slowly, something extraordinary appeared below us. After checking into our beachside resort, we spent the evening exploring the island. Kalpeni's beauty isn't dramatic or flashy. Instead, it slowly reveals itself through its simplicity. Coconut palms line quiet roads, fishermen return home with their catch, and the lagoon appears at almost every turn, glowing under the tropical sun.

The island sightseeing experience introduced us to some of Kalpeni's most beautiful locations. Koomel Beach offered panoramic views of the lagoon, while Lake View Point showcased the incredible scale of the coral atoll. The historic Moideen Mosque, the island's iconic Lighthouse, and the scenic North Tip Beach each added another layer to the story of Kalpeni. By sunset, one thing had become clear — Kalpeni wasn't just beautiful, it was peaceful in a way that very few destinations remain today.

A Day on Cheriyam Island

The next morning brought one of the highlights of the journey — a visit to Cheriyam Island. Located near Kalpeni, this small island feels almost untouched by time. As our boat approached the shoreline, the lagoon transformed into a giant natural swimming pool of crystal-clear water. The visibility was remarkable, revealing coral formations and marine life beneath the surface.

Snorkelling here felt like entering another world. Schools of colourful fish moved effortlessly through the lagoon while sunlight created shifting patterns across the seabed. Unlike crowded beach destinations, there were no large crowds, no commercial activity, and no distractions. Just clear water, coral reefs, and complete tranquillity.

What makes Cheriyam special isn't simply its beauty. It is the feeling of being somewhere genuinely untouched. In an era where even remote destinations have become crowded, Cheriyam still feels like a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered.

Life Above and Below the Water

By the third day, we had begun to understand why Lakshadweep is often compared to some of the world's finest tropical destinations. The morning began with kayaking through Kalpeni's calm lagoon waters. The water was so clear that coral patches could often be seen directly beneath the kayak, creating the sensation of floating above an underwater garden.

For those seeking a deeper marine experience, scuba diving offered an opportunity to explore Lakshadweep's vibrant underwater ecosystem. The coral reefs surrounding Kalpeni support an incredible diversity of marine life, making it one of the most rewarding diving destinations in India. Whether kayaking on the surface or diving beneath it, every moment reinforced how unique this island truly is.

Pitti Island: India's Smallest Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the most fascinating excursions of the trip was a visit to Pitti Island, widely recognised as India's smallest wildlife sanctuary. Tiny in size but immense in ecological significance, this protected island serves as an important nesting ground for seabirds. As our boat approached, thousands of birds could be seen circling above the island, creating a spectacular natural display.

Every year, migratory seabirds arrive here to nest and raise their young. The island plays a crucial role in the conservation of several marine bird species and offers a rare opportunity to witness one of India's least-known wildlife destinations.

The excursion also included nearby Thilakkam Island, where a glass-bottom boat ride revealed colourful coral gardens, reef fish, and pristine marine ecosystems beneath the crystal-clear waters. Turtle points around the island added another exciting dimension to the experience, with lucky visitors occasionally spotting sea turtles gliding gracefully through the lagoon.

Why Kalpeni Is Different

What makes Kalpeni truly special isn't a single attraction. It isn't the seaplane, the lagoon, or even the marine life. It is the feeling of discovering somewhere that still feels undiscovered.

For decades, Kalpeni remained one of Lakshadweep's lesser-known islands, accessible only to a fortunate few. Even today, tourism remains limited enough to preserve the island's authenticity. The lagoons remain untouched. The islands remain peaceful. The sunsets remain uninterrupted. And every morning still begins with the sound of waves meeting coral shores.

As our seaplane lifted off from the lagoon for the journey back to Kochi, Kalpeni slowly disappeared into the horizon. But the memories remained. Not just memories of beautiful beaches and clear water, but memories of experiencing a destination before the rest of the world discovers it.
